Es un elemento químico cuyo símbolo es Cd, su número atómico es 48, situado en el grupo 12 de la tabla periódica. Metal pesado, blanco, azulado rosado poco abundante. Uno de los metales más tóxicos aunque un elemento químico esencial. Se emplea en pilas.

MITOLOGÍA
Del latín cadmia, nombre antiguo del carbonato de zinc. Cadmo, es hijo de Agenor, Rey de Tiro. Mandó buscar a su hermana y que luego regresase sin ella. El fue con su madre, Telefasa, también llamada Argiope. En Rodas construyó un templo en honor de Poseidón. Su madre murió en el país de Tracios. El oráculo les anunció que abandonases la búsqueda de su hermana, Europa, y siguiesen a una vaca. Cuando Cadmo aconsejó sacrificar la vaca, encontraron una gran serpiente que acabó con muchos de los compañeros de Cadmo. Este la mató con una piedra y luego sembró en l atierra los dientes de la serpiente. A Cadmo, se le atribuye en Grecia la propagación del alfabeto y el arte de difundir los metales
