The rennet (of the Latin Gallia, France), was discovered by means of espectroscopia by Lecoq de Boisbaudran in 1875 by his characteristic spectrum (two ultraviolet lines) on having examined a blende of zinc proceeding from the Pyrenees. The solid rennet looks like a bluish grey when it is exposed to the atmosphere. The liquid rennet is a silver white.
