Hercules was the name in Roman mythology Greek mythology of the hero Heracles, being a metathesis of the Greek name. He was the son of Jupiter, the Roman equivalent of the Greek god Zeus and the mortal Alcmena. He conducted twelve great work, called The Twelve Labours of Heracles and was deified.
The Romans adopted the Greek version of his life and works essentially unchanged, but added anecdotal detail of their own, some of them linking the hero with the geography of the western Mediterranean. Details of his cult were also adapted to Spain.
