Argo Navis

• Argo Navis was (and, in a sense, still is) a large constellation in the Southern Hemisphere sky, representing the ship that traveled Jason and the Argonauts in Greek mythology. This is the only constellation described by Ptolemy is not recognized today. For its size (about 1884 square degrees, more than any other), was divided into several smaller constellations by Nicolas-Louis de Lacaille in the eighteenth century: these are Carina (the Keel), Puppis (the Stern), Vela (the latter). The latter takes the place that corresponds to the mast of the ship.
