MERCURY

Its name comes from the planet of the same name, but his abbreviated Hg. Dioscorides called it silver water (Greek hydrárgyros). Hydra = water, gyros = silver. Born in Arcadia (Southern Greece), son of Jupiter and Maya. Mercury is the creator of the lyre and is credited with the invention of music, the alphabet, astronomy, gymnastics, weights and measures, inventor of the flute or syrinx, god of the arena and stadium, god of travelers. Participation in both events in the divine as human excellence is the herald of the gods.
